In the interests of safety and good airmanship, the pilot should be familiar with these documents.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eIntroduction to the Cessna 152\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt a glance, the Cessna 152 appears almost identical to the later model of the long-running Cessna 150 that it replaced; however, on doser inspedion there are many différences.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Cessna 152 was first introduced in 1977, after over 23,000 C150s had been produced.The Cessna 152 has a Lycoming 0-235-L2C engine, giving 110 HP, as opposed to the 100 HP Continental engine of the Cessna 150. The electrical System and fuel System are redesigned and the gross weight increased by 70 Ibs. An Aerobat version was also produced (A152); in this version the airframe is “beefed up” to withstand the increased positive and négative loads involved in aerobatics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs with its predecessor, the 152 was mostly built in Wichita, Kansas; although a significant number were built by Reims Aviation in France. The French built aircraft are identical to the USA built examples, but Reims aircraft model numbers are preceded with an “F”; i.e., F152 and FA152.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThrough the production of the 152 there were few major design changes. In 1983 the Lycoming 0-235 N2C engine became standard. This engine featured a redesigned combustion chamber to overcome lead fouling problems experienced with the L2C.The spark plugs of the newer N2C engine apparently hâve a life up to three times that of the L2C. The horsepower is reduced slightly to 108 HP, speed and range are similarly affected. In 1984 the landing and taxi lights were moved from the lower cowling to the leading edge of the left wing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProduction of the 152 ceased in 1985 after over 7,000 aircraft had been built. It had become yet another victim of the vicious spiral of rapidly escalating production costs—caused not least by the USA’s product liability situation—and falling demand. Many of the Cessna 150s built in the 1960s continue in daily flight school use, and there is no reason to believe that the Cessna 152 will not display the same longevity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis publication deals with the standard 152, although much of the information is also relevant to the “Aerobat” models. The 172 makes a natural progression forthose trained in Cessna 150s or 152s, and has a well earned réputation for being safe and forgiving, with few airframe or engine problems.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"Texteducorps0\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Texteducorps\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"\u003eThis book covers the 172s built from 1977 through to 1985 (models 172N and 172P). These models are powered by the Lycoming 0-320 engine of 160 HP, replacing the 150 HP version, which itself had replaced the six cylinder Continental engines in the 1960s. The 172 is popularly referred to as the “Skyhawk” and the “Skyhawk II” which was sold with an increas- ed standard package including an avionics fit. As with other Cessna models a significant number were manufactured by Reims Aviation in France. These models are identical to American built examples, but carry the “F” prefix to their model number.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"line-height: 105%;\" class=\"Texteducorps0\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Texteducorps\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"\u003eThe 172N is powered by the 0-320-H2AD engine which proved to be an expensive proposition, contrary to previous 172 powerplants. It was subject to various ADs (Airworthiness Directives), oil additives and spécial operating procedures as a resuit of problems in the valve train. The controversial situation with the H2AD engine continued until 1981 when a new model of engine—the D2J—was introduced, which appears to hâve been altogether better. Also in this year the maximum flap extension was reduced from 40° to 30° and the gross weight was increased by 100 Ibs. In addition, the landing and taxi lights were moved from the lower cowling to the leading edge of the port wing. This final version of the Skyhawk is designated the 172P.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"line-height: normal;\" class=\"Texteducorps0\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Texteducorps\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"\u003eProduction of the 172 ended in 1985, another victim of the problems affecting the General Aviation industry in the early 1980s.
