Basically, two types of missions are conducted: defoliation of jungle foliage and destruction of crops in areas controlled by the Viet Cong (VC). Many factors have served to motivate these operations. Some of the more important considerations are the desire to eliminate enemy camps and secure areas (safe havens), to obtain better vertical visibility in heavily canopied jungle for the purposes of reconnaissance and interdiction, to minimize cover along transportation routes to prevent VC ambush, and to destroy trees and vegetation surrounding special forces bases and communication routes to aid in base security measures and to preclude sabotage of communication facilities. Crop destruction operations were undertaken with the hope of denying the Viet Cong valuable foodstuffs by destroying crops and food resources in the immediate area. This would force the enemy to move from place to place to obtain food and would not allow him time to perfect his camp defences or to develop long-range offensive programs. Recently he bailed out of a plane which, in the opinion of those who saw it, could have been safely landed. He has torn up two other aircraft besides these two. He has always abused his airplane. Time and time again he has exceeded engine-operation limits, stress limits, and overload.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe men interviewed supplied the names of about 2,000 wanted and approximately the same number of not wanted pilots; and they gave descriptions of each man named. There weren't 2,000 different names at the two ends of the scale, since many pilots were named as wanted—or as not wanted—by more than one person. Agreement in appraising men as very good or very poor ran high. At the same time, once a man had received even one vote as wanted, the chance of his ever getting a vote as not wanted was very small.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pilots who gave these descriptions employed approximately 10,000 identifiable reasons (about 3 reasons for each name on the average) in telling why they wanted or did not want a given man to fly with them in combat.
