"Experiences and achievements of our pilots in the fight against England

Hrsg. Sonderführer ( Z ) Walter Zuerl

Curt Pechstein Verlag München Erscheinungsjahr 1941

In 1941, Walter Zuerl was an official war correspondent of the Luftwaffe. He wrote a book about the air operations since the beginning of the conflict. It is of course a propaganda book, but it is of great historical interest. After the 'blitzkrieg', the image of the Luftwaffe - the 'hammer' of the Fuhrer - was still at its peak. The true balance of the Battle of Britain has not yet been made. The Eastern Front is not yet open.

The author evokes the aerial combats over the Doggerbank (North Sea) in September 1939, the support to the submarines, the phoney war, the photographic reconnaissance over the Maginot line, the aerial combats over the Marne during the French campaign, patrols over the Shetland Islands (and Scapa Flow), some rewarding episodes ("4 Messerschmitt against 12 French Moranes"), operations over the mouth of the Thames, air battles against the RAF, massive bomber raids against British cities, combat against British reconnaissance aircraft over occupied Europe, rescue of downed pilots over the North Sea, the role of submarines in rescuing downed pilots, the fight against British flak, operations in Norway, the attack on Belgian airfields during the 18-day campaign, the attack on trains, the bombing of French ports, Stuka operations over Flanders and the Maginot Line, all with the individual feats of arms and heroism that befit this kind of book.

An interesting piece.
